The Hoboken Green Fair will feature green businesses and aims to help raise environmental awareness as well as introduce sustainable lifestyle choices to residents. Greener Corners will be providing recycling bins for the event and will be available to answer any questions about our public space recycling program.

A Public Space Recycling Program That Relies on People Power, Not Just Great Design.

If you have ever spent the day carrying around an empty soda bottle or an old magazine you’ve read cover-to-cover, unsuccessfully looking for a recycling bin on every corner, then you’ve already experienced firsthand the problem green entrepreneurs Aaron Klein and Steven Goldenberg set out to solve with their community based recycling business, Greener Corners. When they started in 2009, Klein noticed that while there were ample recycling options for homes and buildings, including programs like curbside recycling and recycling bins in schools, “there was no attention being paid to doing this in public areas like downtown areas and parks,” he said.

To solve this problem, Klein and Goldenberg founded Greener Corners, a community-based, cost-free public space recycling program that provides neighborhoods, private institutions, and municipalities with custom-designed recycling bins that encourage passersby to properly dispose of their trash. Financially supported by the local business advertising displayed on the side of the bins, Greener Corners has worked with communities in New York, New Jersey, Ohio and Colorado to build awareness, protect the environment, and even raise some new local revenue (that doesn’t involve raising taxes).

And Greener Corners has achieved real results for the communities it works in. Within less than four months of its initial implementation of the program in Colorado Springs, public officials announced that it had diverted approximately 20 tons of would-be trash from landfills, meaning that 41 percent of the area’s total waste was recycled instead. That equates to saving 171 trees, conserving over 250,000 gallons of water, removing fifteen cars from the roads, cutting oil consumption by more than 9,000 gallons, or averting 58,000+ pounds of greenhouse gases from emissions. All in less than four months. (In total since its founding in 2009, Greener Corners has saved the equivalent of 726,361 kWh of energy, 408 mature trees, 505,000+ gallons of water, or taken 42 cars off the road.)

One reason that Greener Corners has been so successful is that it engages with the community to educate people about recycling with the program—it doesn’t just stick some pretty recycling bins in the city square and hope people will simply catch on. It assembles “Green Teams” of local volunteer recruits, teaching them about recycling and how the program works, so that they can bring that message to their neighbors. “We develop relationships with the YMCA and the Boys and Girls Clubs and find folks who are out there and looking for volunteer work,” Klein says. “We do some brief education and training on what the program’s all about and maybe give them some pizza,” and pretty soon they’ve got a team of educators to head to local schools, civic centers, and community organizations to do presentations as well as bringing recycling awareness to public events.

And to keep their community members educated and involved, Greener Corners has launched new features to be used with smartphones. Locals can scan the barcode on the recycling bin to find out what materials can be recycled in that municipality. Its iPhone app also allows individuals to track their own recycling and the impact they are making on the planet. So if you find yourself carting around recyclables, waiting until you get home to throw them away properly, consider inviting Greener Corners into your neighborhood.

Backpacking/Hiking Demonstation

9 a.m.-1 p.m. Stop by and chat with members of TWC’s Backpackers & Dayhikers Club. Gather information at the Prairie Shelter for your next dayhike or backpacking trip. Some of the subjects include backpacks and how to pack them, meals  and water, tents, first aid and personal care, clothing, and Ultra-lite  backpacking. Come and view various pieces of equipment and find out  what is right for you.

What’s Up? Planetarium Show

2 p.m. Take a half-hour tour of major constellations, planets, the Moon, and other things you can see in the evening sky next month. Optional, stay after the program to  make your own star chart to use year-round. Free.

What is going on here? These recycling stations have been installed around Canton, at least two of these were visible in Stadium Park.

CANTON —

Recycling containers have been posted throughout the downtown area and at some city parks.

For the first time, visitors to those areas have a place to put recyclable items such as plastic bottles, aluminum cans and newspapers. The containers also have a separate compartment for trash.

Containers were delivered and installed last week. In the spring, the city announced it was entering into an agreement with the Rutherford, N.J.-based Greener Corners.

About 40 containers have been placed near businesses and busy intersections and at several parks. The containers are affixed, and about 25 are in the downtown area.

The program does not cost the city any money, said Derek Gordon, the city’s assistant service and safety director who is serving as the interim assistant park director.

Greener Corners supports the program through advertising space sold on the black bins. Under the five-year agreement, the city will receive a portion of the revenue. A revenue projection was not available.

In the first year, the city’s share is 3 percent before increasing 3 percent each year until reaching 15 percent in the fifth year.

Advertising is handled by Greener Corners, but the city has discretion over the type permitted.

‘COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT’

The intent is to increase recycling in the community in conjunction with the city’s curbside pickup and offerings at the recycling center on Schroyer Avenue SW, Gordon said.

Mayor William J. Healy II said the containers enhance the city’s overall recycling efforts.

The Canton Regional Chamber of Commerce and the Downtown Canton Special Improvement District have been proponents of the program.

Aaron Klein of Greener Corners said, “The whole success of the program comes from community involvement.” The Green Team, comprised of volunteers, will promote recycling at schools and in the community.

The city sanitation department will pick up the recyclables and trash as part of the regular routes in the downtown area, Gordon said. Park containers will be emptied either by the sanitation crews or the park department, Gordon said. Arrangements are being worked out.

Park recycling sites include Stadium, Monument, Waterworks, Willig, Cook and Schreiber.

RECYCLING AND GARBAGE

Founded in 2009, Greener Corners recently launched the program in Sandusky. It also provides the service in Colorado Springs as well as in communities in New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania.

The company handled the installation of the containers. Greener Corners also is responsible for replacements and maintenance. The containers are made of galvanized steel.

More recycling container sites could be added in the future. Locations also could be adjusted. Greener Corners will track and report the tonnage of recyclables collected.

Greener Corners encourages recycling downtown

There are now 30 different locations throughout Sandusky where trashed items can be salvaged for a second life.

After a long bout of talks, city officials and public recycling company Greener Corners finally produced results this week, with workers installing 30 receptacles accepting both recycling and garbage.

Planners targeted parks, shoreline areas and major pedestrian pathways as places for the recycling receptacles.

“It takes a whole community to make this happen, and it will take a whole community to make this successful,” said Sandusky paralegal Amanda Meyers, who helped launch the program on the city’s end.

Previously, only trash bins existed in Sandusky, presenting limited opportunities for recycling a soda can, magazine or newspaper.

The only city-based public recycling options — a location on Marquette Street, near the Erie County Health Department and another on First Street, near the main Cedar Point entrance — will remain in place.

At no cost to taxpayers, Greener Corners will fund its operation through advertising space sold on the bins.

The public space recycling program will begin with 60 new combination trash and recycle bins in the core downtown area and 90 bins throughout seven of the City’s large community parks and sports complexes. Greener Corners, a full-service public space recycling and environmental organization, will provide, install and maintain the recycling stations at no cost to the City or taxpayers. Advertisements sold by Greener Corners will be placed on the recycle bins in order to cover the cost of the recycling program and earn additional revenue for the City.
